Our verdict

Njalla is a self-managed VPS host with servers in Sweden, aimed at people comfortable running a Linux box from the command line who want to hand over as little personal data as possible. Its terms state that customers are not obliged to provide any information beyond what the signup section lists, which amounts to a written promise that it will not come back later asking for ID documents.

Njalla's signup asks for only an email address or an XMPP account, and an XMPP handle can be far less tied to a real identity than a mainstream mailbox. Payment options carry the same priorities: Monero is accepted, which is the strongest option here for keeping payments unlinkable, alongside Bitcoin, Litecoin and Ethereum. PayPal is also offered, but choosing it ties the order to a verified account and gives up much of the anonymity the rest of the setup provides. Prices are in euros.

Njalla sells VPS plans only, ranging from small to mid-range memory sizes. There is no cPanel; customers get root over SSH and manage everything themselves. Several Linux distributions are available at order time, from Debian and Ubuntu to Alpine and Arch. Every server includes one IPv4 and one IPv6 address, connects at 10Gbps with a monthly traffic allowance, and runs on redundant CEPH storage in an Incus-based setup. The servers sit in undisclosed locations within Sweden, and the site itself is reachable through a Tor onion address.

Njalla's restrictions matter for some uses. Outgoing SMTP is blocked on VPS servers, so self-hosted mail delivery is off the table, and network scanning is banned. Payments are final unless the provider decides otherwise. Its terms also allow it to pass a customer's email or XMPP data to authorities after an acceptable-use violation, and to terminate services to comply with law enforcement requests or court orders. Because so little is collected at signup, that contact address is close to all there is to hand over.

Njalla makes most sense for privacy-minded users who want a plain Linux VPS, pay in Monero and register with a throwaway XMPP account. Anyone planning to run a mail server, wanting a graphical control panel, or needing the ability to get a refund should choose a different host, and so should anyone who needs servers outside Sweden.
